The humble tomato is packed full of phyto-nutrients and is extremely rich in Lycopene which is a powerful antioxidant and is thought to have over 100 times more anti-oxidant properties than Vitamin E
Alongside Beta-carotene, Lutein and Zeaxanthin, Lycopene is classed as a carotenoid - these are the pigments that are found in red, orange and yellow fruits that protect them from the formation of damaging free-radicals, and more importantly from the sun. It has been shown in a study in 2008 that people who consumed a lycopene-rich preparation daily for three months had 33% more protection against sunburn than those consuming a placebo.
In addition to having higher anti-oxidant levels than beta-carotene, lycopene has a further advantage in that the levels of retinol (Vitamin A) are very much lower, so lycopene supplements can safely be taken without risk of increased Vitamin A exposure.
Unfortunately, our body can't easily digest and extract the full anti-oxidant benefits of lycopene by just consuming tomatoes. In order to benefit more, the tomato needs to be processed and refined before being consumed. In our formulation we have already taken care of this, as our supplement contains a full 6mg of Lycopene, in an easy to swallow capsule that is also suitable for vegetarians.
