How does Ova relieve period pain?

Ova is a pocket-sized device that consists of two self-adhesive electrode pads, which are placed on either side of your stomach. These are connected to a small, push-button control unit. By sending electrical impulses - called TENS - through your skin, the Ova attacks pain in two ways. Firstly, it stimulates the release of endorphins, your body's own natural pain-relievers. And second, it stimulates the fibres, blocking out pain messages before they reach the pain.

TENS is used for lots of different kinds of pain, from childbirth through to migraine and arthritis. It's also used for phantom limb pain, which goes some way to illustrating how TENS works. Many people who have lost a limb still feel intense pain in that limb, even though it no longer exists. This is because the brain is accustomed to it being there, and cannot ‘switch off' the signals that it thinks it is receiving from the limb. This demonstrates that pain is a question of perception by the brain, and TENS allows us to interfere with the way in which our brains perceive pain.

TENS has been used for many years, during which it has been shown to be safe, reliable and controllable. Unlike painkilling drugs, it's not possible to overdose on TENS, and it allows you to manage pain, allowing you to get on with your life.

How do I know if I need Ova?
If you suffer from period pain, you need Ova...

Ova for Girls

As many as 15% of school-age girls are taking time off school because of period pain. This can affect your education and ultimately your results, yet schools are unable to dispense painkillers, and too many can be dangerous. Oral contraceptives may resolve the problem but they too carry dangers for underage girls, and may be an unwelcome solution for parents. Ova is an ideal solution for girls, giving them a safe and effective means of ensuring that period pain doesn't restrict their lives.

Ova for Women

Many women don't take oral contraceptives for a variety of reasons, including health, religion, sexual orientation or because they prefer other forms of contraception. Despite being older - and being healthy - period pain can still be a problem for these groups of women, resulting in time off work and damaging the quality of their lives. Ova is discreet and easy to use, allowing you to manage your pain and get on with your day.

If you suffer from period pain, you need Ova...

Ova has been designed to be there for you, no matter what you are doing. When you know that your period is on its way, you should put on the electrodes in the morning as you're getting dressed, clipping the control unit to your trousers, skirt or underwear, or slipping it into a pocket.

When you feel the period pain coming on, switch on the Ova, turning it up until you can feel it start to fight the pain. When the pain goes, switch it off, keeping the electrodes and control unit in place, in case the pain returns.

Another way to use the Ova is to stop pain before it begins. This is particularly useful when you need to be avoid distractions and remain alert, such as during an exam, driving test or business presentation. The Ova has three different pain-relieving modes, which are fully explained in the instructions that come with your Ova. Mode C relieves pain by stimulating the body to release endorphins (the body's natural painkillers). Due to this endorphin release, Mode C has a carry-over pain relief effect that can last for up to two hours after the Ova is switched off.
