What Are Free Radicals?

Free radicals are oxidized particles that result from normal metabolism in our body. However, if not properly removed from our eyes by good blood circulation, free radicals can damage cells to the eye and possibly lead to eye problems. Lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants that can "absorb" free radicals before they can cause damage.

What are lutein and zeaxanthin?

The carotenoids found in fruits and vegetables promote and maintain healthy vision. Two important carotenoids that are helpful in protecting the retina, are lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are considered essential micronutrients for eye health. They occur in healthy eyes as a part of the macular pigment. Opthalmologists often use the density of the macula as a measure of how healthy our eyes are. Some, however, may not consume sufficient daily quantities of lutein and zeaxanthin-rich foods to get the necessary eye protection benefit we need.
