Black Cohosh may help to ease the symptoms of the menopause, with some finding that it helps to reduce the severity of hot flushes.

Black Cohosh, a shrub-like plant native to North America, is used by thousands of women who are seeking a natural alternative to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). During the menopause, oestrogen production decreases while lutenising hormone secretions increase, which may be the cause of some of the symptoms of the menopause, such as hot flushes. Some studies have suggested that Black Cohosh has similar properties to oestrogen which may help to reduce LH secretions, and so may help to reduce the severity of hot flushes. Black Cohosh is rich in isoflavones, which may help with menstrual irregularities as well as symptoms associated with PMT such as stomach cramps. Furthermore, Black Cohosh may help to improve moods as it is thought that it may help to stimulate serotonin levels.
